Evaluation Report

    Within my Sketch Innovation classes I have learnt how to make both a Japanese style sketchbook and also a hard cover sketchbook. By researching online I found several video tutorial on how to approach the processes. These classes have also helped me engage with the wider world of sketching and drawing, i have learnt that they are very different styles and that they have many more angles into their definition. Drawing and sketching is not just a technique you do with a pen or pencil in your hand, it can be anything from tire tracks left on a road to the splatters on rain on a dry ground, i now understand that the potential of what a drawing or a sketch could be is extremely broad.

    Throughout my classes i have gained much experience when it comes to using instruments and/or objects to draw with. I have been practicing with different body parts such as the mouth, elbows, and ears, also practising with bottle tops and plastics. Within a team activity we invented a machine to draw and create marks with alone; unsupported by us. Following each class I created a blog that presented what had been accomplished during each session, I then wrote about what i had learnt and produced as well as what was successful and what was not. On our first session we listened to a professor of drawing speak about ‘what is a drawing?’ which helped me prepare for a presentation that we all had to encounter later on in the classes.

   I have learnt a lot within these classes such as presenting in the pecha kucha style, after finding their website i am now fully aware of what pecha kucha is, i have successfully presented one of my own pecha kucha demonstrations and was very pleased with the outcome.

Working in groups of people and collaborating thoughts, has taught me how to listen to the ideas of others. I think it is really worth gathering information from others as a way to acknowledge further perspectives on something only seen through your own mind and eyes. It was also a good social experiment and cross of varied specialised people.

    Making my own sketchbook was great fun and surprisingly easy, having learnt two different types of sketchbook binding and i am now able to experiment freely with papers and shapes. Sketching can be ‘wild’ I have been gradually building up knowledge of what potentially sketching could be?! i now see it everywhere! from scratches on tables, to aeroplane tracks in the sky.

   Drawing to music was a new and fun experiment that i undertook, i had never thought of doing such a crazy process yet, my out comes are beautiful to look at; especially when you know the song it was produced to. The reason i like this process the most is that the musical rhythms change, i feel my emotions follow my ears and my Hands follow my emotions. looking at the results i see each element of my physical and emotional journey lying flat on a sheet of paper.

    The materials i used throughout the experiments have very little colour, my reasoning for this is that i wanted to concentrate on the techniques rather than be sidetrack by colour however, if i were to do it all over again i would defiantly try out a wider collection of textured materials, pens, brushes cloth etc. I would also want to make another type of sketchbook and research the history of them overall. The last thing i would change is my vocal interaction throughout the class collaborations, i did speak and say my part, however i would have liked to have seen and been involved in a proper discussion.

looking back i would have liked to have learnt the history of book binding and maybe watched a few videos on how the first book binders worked to create books with old fashioned and under developed instruments. I would have also liked to create one extremely large scale sketch including the whole class.

I suggest that maybe the course would be improved if the students were more scattered through specialist subjects as most of my class was Textiles design students.

Personal and Professional Development – Sketch Innovation.

Personal and professional Development.

These drawing are have been taken from my current Textiles Design project.

This sketch innovation experience has taught me a lot about drawing and sketching, i now understand that there are many approaches to drawing and that there are differences between sketching and mark-making. The techniques I have used on these two drawings (above) are discribed as direct, strong and smooth, pen to paper lines with no pre planning or mark making. by practicing this new and direct technique i have gained such currange and confidence in my decision making abilities and observational skills.

Now i feel more confident with varied approaches to drawing and sketching, from now on i know that whenever i begin to draw i will reflect on all i have learnt within my sketch innovation classes. Hopefully my future work will have that innovative glow!

The real world can be spoken about in animation! This short animated film is all about humans! It is small things we do in life that makes life much more interesting?! as humans we are full of emotions and passions but within one moment we can create  great machines to kill and hurt with the least amount of effort. After watching ‘The big Snit’ i felt a sense of reflection on our social and extended social societies. Animations can give out real world messages.

A boy group named Blur released a song in 2004 titled ‘Good song’, The official Music video released for this song captures the creative eyes of animators – By David Shrigley.

‘Love Story’

This animation is about a fantasy creature (fairy) looking for love, after failing to find love from his/her list of animals he/she finally falls for a squirrel, they spend a lot of romantic time together when suddenly, the squirrel accidentally bite the fairy’s head off mistaking it for a acorn?! a group of fairy’s hunt the poor squirrel down with axes and arrows killing him!

In 2005 an album named ’64-95′ was released by a Group named ‘Lemon Jelly’ track 6 is called ’79 aka The Shouty Track’ the music video for this track it is an animated story including two fictional rock charactors…

These two rockers have real character with their long hair and leather trousers! as a viewer i find then really easy to relate to and understand! there great fun to watch!

This music video is so interesting! they technique used ‘pre cinematic device’ in action is so interesting ti watch as they build and layer them to gather in a modified ensemble. This video has actually taught me how the pre cinematic devices work. Each device has a motif of stories within it, when played in correlation together a larger story is revealed throughout the music video.

Reflection:

This session we really insightful, i have watch animated clips from a vast array subjects which has truly open my eyes into the world of slow motion, animation and pre cinematic devices. i have learnt that animated displays can both positively and negatively portray humanity via story telling, fantasising, inventing and recreating situations with ‘made-up’ characters etc… I have learnt that messages can be verbalised differently and taken seriously through animation. Overall i have found these videos to be funny and educational, i am really inspired by the producers and creative teams behind them.

As a textiles designer and having gained more knowledge about animation i aim to consider the process of story telling within my future work.

Drawing Devices – Session 5 – Sketch Innovation

Drawing Devices 

Individually or in pairs/ groups of three, make a drawing device and film it in action…

This is our plan! we have made a contraption that by using string alone we can stabilise a pen and draw with it…The sting will be pull tight making the pen stand…by moving the tight sting in unison collaboratively we can attempt to draw an image!

The sketch outcomes benith are each unique explanation: we can control the movements from above, but when the pen head touches the surface of the paper the friction caused delays in movements causing wrong lines, angles and marks. however the final images look interesting as the shapes made, seem to be more expressional and loose. I like it!

Overview.

To begin me an my team mate struggled inventing an idea for a drawing machine, we had a few failed attempts but soon settled with this process we named ‘Web’. It is a technique that i see so much potential for, for example imagine it on a really large scale and 20+ people being involved with string (based around one pen) It was a great collaborative exercise that needs patients, concentration and experimentation.

Sketch Innovation – Session 4

To Start: Two-minute sketches – Session 4

 Things that are Circles.

These four images represent a 2 minute drawing compared to a 30sec sketch. Both images represent the same thing and portray the same story…in this case is a drawing more valuable than a sketch? my answer is no, they both successfully represent a penny coin and a bracelet.

Draw a portrait of the person on your right (about making mistakes, accepting difficult challenges, discussing afterwards).

This was a really funny task, it is quite difficult to draw the person next to you as there is so much detail to consider as well as accurasy..so the sketch actually looks like the person. My plan was to quickly find shapes by mark making and planning with suggestions . IT WAS HARD!! However i believe there is no right of wrong as this is a quick suggestive sketch of the person sitting next to me, IT IS NOT A DRAWING!!! The mistakes that were seem to have been made are not mistakes…..they are simple marks that render the final image!

Pick a Detail in the room and draw it.

This is a sketch of a window ledge it took me approximately 5 minutes I chose this section of the room as it had lots of detail, lines and shapes as well as perspective,  all of these elements made me truly observe the window and reproduce it looking representative.

Pick a detail on the person next to you and draw it.

These two drawing are that of small details found on the person next to me, clothing, facial features etc… the first image is a button on a knitted cardigan and the second selection of images are all angles of All Star trainer. It was really tricky drawing these records as my “person” could not keep still, however i managed to get a good visualisation of what i needed and my outcomes symbolise the correct shapes, subject and scale.

Spatial Narratives: Narrating a visual storyline of events and/or journeys.

1. 3-5minutes. The Commute: Draw the journey from Home to College this morning. Think about what happened and what narrative approach you want to take to show the experience. Is it a map is it an emotional journey? Is it about what you were thinking about. Is it about what happened or what you saw?

This Drawing is a map of my physical journey from home to University, (This is only the start) the lines represent estimates of distance and direction. I found this challenge really exciting, it was interesting to see what information i remember and the gaps i fill when confused. To help me with this process i thread to visually remember my journey step by step in my head.

These next collection of images are more visualised and based on visual objects, happenings, picture memories and processes, i have sketched sections of my journeys to university by subtracting what i actually see when moving….here i have focused on steps, tube entrances, Trees, roads, paths, signs, cars all of which i recall seeing.

3-5 minutes: Draw a layout of your first house in plan view

The first attempt of drawing my house in a plan view failed as my line were confused and there perspective and angles of my rooms were incorrect, however learning from my mistakes i managed to rebuild it with more of an accurate finish.

5 mins From Memory draw a map of Chelsea College of Arts

OK! this, i found hard getting my head around, one minute you think everything is right and the next you realise you have just missed out a whole section of the building!!! I thought this task would be the easiest as i thought i new the inside of D block fairly well…HOW WRONG WAS I!!! I began to make up spaced and rooms to the point when questioned my accurate knowledge profoundly!

NOTE TO SELF… 

”When entering a building be sensitive to the actual layout of the room in relation to the other rooms and the building itself. be more appreciative of the space you standing in and observe the structures.”

 

 5 Mins Team up into a groups draw a collaborative map of Chelsea College of Arts

This image is not in my sketchbook as in the group i worked in only one collaborative image was produced! However…This task was very strange! everyone has a different perspective and visual for an outcome. i found it really hard at first to command some of my ideas, but as soon and we finalised a basic shape we all began to map in the further details.

This exercise was so much fun, i really got into the emotional elements of the songs and really began to unite with the rhythms of the song, i feel as if i have been through an emotional roller coaster of musical genres! The differences between each image is considerably different and unique, i seemed to follow there base of the strings in the music as i felt they would give me more of an accurate representation of the beat and flow of the songs. The slow calming some made me move slowly and steady with the pen contrasting with the heavy bold scrapes of the dark metal movements.

Overview of Session 4…

The tasks throughout this session have been so insightful and interesting, i have began to understand the ways sketch innovation can transform the ways you think about drawing processes and sketching movements. I feel that i am now more aware of the potentials for sketching and approached towards developing.

Session 3

Sketchbook sharing and discussion.

PRESENT, DISCUSS, OBSERVE.

What is innovation?

Today we discussed in group as what innovation is and can innovation come from adopting approaches from across disciplines.

In groups of 8 we sat around a table and each gave a 5-10miniute presentation to fellow students about one of our own personal sketchbook (that have been used prior to this class) followed by showing our newly hand made sketchbook. This process was designed to help cross collaboration with varied student approaches from different courses. The out comes were very interesting!

 

  

The images above show just a few of the sketchbooks made and bought in by my fellow students. There is a combination of hardcover book and Japanese style attempts and images of our group collaborations. I was joined but students from cross specialist blocks such as Jieun, who studies Graphic Design, Yixuan who studies Knit Design and Lu who studies Weave design, their approaches to sketchbook usages and making were completely different to mine for example I felt mine was very neat and textured by my choice of material, where as the others varied from plain and simple, geometric, shabby etc…. it was really good to hear each individual student talk about how they feel their work is presented.

As we looked through each others work and listened to their explanation of it we had a list of helpful notes that allowed us to be more observational of each other.

Overall todays session was really good fun, I got to meet new students in my class and truly begin to understand the direction of this course. I was really impressed by the handmade sketchbooks as they looked almost professional!!! I have been inspired to carry my new skill on and try new and explorative ways to progress.

Session 2

Sketch Innovation

Session 2

Today we discussed the definitions and expectations of the course ahead.

Bookbinding techniques, sketchbook usages, group collaboration (especially with those who are in different specialised groups, cross subject boundaries allows us to share and discuss a broad range of approaches to sketching and sketchbooks over the whole plan of Art and Design.

Todays session start with a small book making activity, we were given (BELOW) an A4 sheet of paper that contained instruction as to how to make a book. That is what we all did…

After about 10mins of cutting and sticking, I had created my first miniature book. This process has given my first insight into how to go about making a sketchbook. Next our task was to go home and research how to make a larger more practical sketchbook. I look on YouTube and found several processes, I chose to attempt a hardcover.

For this sketchbook, the materials I used were all recycled from my crap material box which is full of papers and materials. I used a selection on cartridge paper for the pages inside, cardboard for the hard cover base, gold embroidery thread for the binding of the pages, thick gold cording for the page marker, red cord material for the cover and fur for the decoration.

The making of this sketchbook was not that difficult, it was time consuming and there was a lot of PVA glue used so i had to wait for it to dry a lot. overall i really enjoyed making it, as soon as i completed it i felt the sensations of accomplishment and success, i feel it turned out very well, better that i initially expected as my doubts were based on the lack of practice and experience. I have enjoyed using new tools to make the book with and I will defiantly carry on making!

 

Session One – Shaping our Territory

Throughout the first sketch innovation session i began to learn the expectations for this chosen territory. The questions and answers asked has allowed me to understand what ‘we’ as a group expected from this course and what is actually to come…

After listening to Professor Stephen Farthing talk about his journey in the exploration of drawing a drawing, i now feel that my understanding of what drawing actually is/can be has changed dramatically. I always believed that my acknowledgment of drawing and practice of it was fairly diverse and investigative however, Professor Stephen Farthing has opened my eyes wider into seeing drawing almost everywhere. I especially liked the way he talked about  unexpected drawn marks such as the vapour trail from a plane, car marks on a road and slime left from a snail. These messages pull the stereotypical translation of drawing away from that of which we all commonly think we know i.e. landscapes and portraits, we now have a whole new way of recording drawing.

Professor Stephen Farthings project on ‘Drawing of Drawing’ was really great to see, for me especially as his subject of choice really intrigued me into wanting him to succeed in his research which i believe he did.

This is a screen shot of his most recent ‘Drawing of Drawing’ All of the elements of drawing research has   accumulated to this… Landscape, mapping, diagrams, technical. (theses are just a few of his key definitions).

It is amazing to see the work of Professor Stephen Farthing, his representation of the possibilities within drawing gives a new visual and literal acceleration towards the direction of expanding ‘what drawing is or can be’ more. I truly recommend this youtube video named ‘Drawing Drawing’ it has enabled me to see drawing in new lights, other contexts and varied forms around me.

After only one session, i am excited about learning more on bookbinding, the usages of sketchbooks learning about the ways fellow students used sketchbooks, and finally practising and innovating sketch!

 

Notes to self!

What is a sketchbook? I believe a sketchbook is a blank document that i destined to be filled with personal expression. Memories, Drawings, Marks that quickly represent something, numbers, calculations, shapes, directions, colours, figures, outlines, objects, photographs, samples… (anything thats holds a memory quickly or form.)

What is sketching? Sketching is a quick response in a mark making form that symbolises what is there in front of you! or What is in your mind! or even what is described to you! THE POINT OF A SKETCH IS A QUICK FEW SURFACE MARKS THAT SYMBOLISE SOMETHING!  

What is innovation? Innovation is experiments, thinking outside of the box, Building up on new ideas, being actively challenged, being mindfully unmindful….
